The Reorientation of Economy

Sir,

Sir,

I thank you for carrying the statement of the Maharashtra Regional Committee of the CGPI entitled “The Working Class must fight for the Reorientation of the Economy!” in the November 16-30, 2011 issue of MEL. This statement is very timely and important and is compulsory reading for all those who are interested in the emancipation of the country from the rule of the bourgeoisie. The CGPI has been at the forefront of the call for the working class to take charge of the economy and to free it from the stranglehold that the bourgeoisie has on it. Therefore, it is only fitting that a blueprint for this should also be put forward.

The statement is an important marker of the condition of the economy and the polity as it makes very significant observations that the period since 1991 has been one in which the biggest industrial houses have grown by leaps and bounds and one in which there has been a huge increase in the number of poor people at the other pole; it has condemned millions to lives of abject and hopeless poverty, and also worsened the general suffering of the masses. It has pointed out that much of the growth has been in sectors which has not led to growth of jobs. It has debunked the notion that the depreciation of the rupee is market driven, while in reality it has been leveraged to make India a favoured destination for foreign capital. The main yearning of the Indian ruling circles is that of emerging as a big power with all policies being in tune with this aim. History has shown that no country can achieve this without crushing the aspirations of its working peoples under the jackboots of state oppression: the events in India of the last two decades have shown this to be true beyond any doubt, with innumerable events of state terror, arbitrary detentions, crushing of national aspirations of the nations that comprise India, etc. It is impossible to move in this direction without the worst kind of violence perpetrated against the peoples of the country.

The statement points out that “The time has come for the creators of wealth to become the masters and the main beneficiaries of wealth creation”. By calling for the formation of a worker-peasant alliance for the necessary reorientation of the economy, and for socializing of finance, foreign trade and domestic wholesale trade to prevent private profiteering and for radical restructuring of the political process, the statement provides the road map for the working class to work towards its unfinished historical mission.

Sincerely,

S. Nair,

Kochi
