Comrade R. Shanmugam

Staunch Communist, fighting trade unionist, dedicated social worker and humanist Com. R. Shanmugam is no more. A person who worked day and night for the liberation of the working class and welfare of the people, Comrade Shanmugam passed away following a heart attack on 28th of November, 2011 at the young age of 58.

Staunch Communist, fighting trade unionist, dedicated social worker and humanist Com. R. Shanmugam is no more. A person who worked day and night for the liberation of the working class and welfare of the people, Comrade Shanmugam passed away following a heart attack on 28th of November, 2011 at the young age of 58. The Communist Ghadar Party of India conveys heartfelt condolences to his bereaved wife and daughter for this irreparable loss.

Comrade Shanmugam came from a family of fighters for the cause of the working class and toiling masses. His father Thiru. Ramasamy founded the peasant organization which paved the way to building the communist party in Selaiyur, Chennai. Com Shanmugam joined Standard Motors as a worker in his youth and was a front rank fighter in the workers union. When Standard Motors was shut down, Com Shanmugam continued the struggle for the rights of its workers.

Comrade Shanmugam worked hard to establish and strengthen the government school in Selaiyur. He also fought vigorously against the failure of the government in protecting the public lands, natural environment and water bodies. He built public opinion against the authorities on this front and had been instrumental in winning quite a few successes. He also played a leading role in building the construction workers union in his area. He was selfless and ready to support anyone who was in need of help. He was a relentless fighter against the state and its attacks.

Comrade Shanmugam was a staunch communist fighter who dedicated his whole active life to the cause of emancipation of the working class and all the oppressed. His search for a Party with a clear and consistent Marxist Leninist revolutionary line brought him into the ranks of our Party. He dedicated himself to building and strengthening the CGPI in the working class of Tamil Nadu.

Leaders and activists of the Communist Ghadar Party of India, CPI, CPM, CPI(ML) Liberation, Makkalatchi Iyakkam, Katida Thozilalar Sangam, Organization for the protection of Environment, erstwhile Standard Motors Workers Union were amongst those who participated in a memorial meeting held on November 28, 2011.
