The life and work of Captain Lakshmi Sehgal have been a source of example and inspiration to all those who have fought under the banner of freedom and independence, from colonialism, imperialism and all forms of exploitation and oppression.

Lakshmi Sehgal was born in Chennai to a prominent family. After completing her degree in Medicine, she went abroad for higher studies to Singapore during the Second World War. Inspired by anti colonial and patriotic feelings, she joined the Indian National Army (INA) founded by Subhash Chandra Bose and led a women’s battalion.

Settling down in Kanpur, she devoted her life to the cause of the working class, and the liberation of women. The workers of Kanpur loved and respected her, as she not only supported their struggles, but also provided medical care at her clinic.

Mazdoor Ekta Lehar extends deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
