Kisan Andolan intensfies struggle

The Kisan Andolan has announced that it will intensify the struggle for the repeal of the three anti-Kisan laws and for a legally guaranteed MSP for all crops. It has given the call to march again to Delhi — Phir Dilli Chalo. Beginning April 20, thousands of kisans started marching back from their villages to the Delhi borders. More than 100 teachers of the Punjab Government Teachers Association reached the Tikri border on 23rd April.

Many kisans had left for their villages in late March and early April to carry out the rabi harvest operations in Punjab and Haryana. Having completed the same, most of the kisans are returning to the protest sites at Delhi’s border points of Singhu, Tikri, Ghazipur and Shahjahanpur on the Haryana Rajasthan border.

The government and its spokespersons, for their part, have once again attempted to defame the kisan andolan by alleging that the protests at the borders are hampering the delivery of oxygen cylinders from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to Delhi. The government is also threatening to break up the protests citing the sites as potential “super-spreaders” of the Covid-19 infection. It is trying to whip up public opinion against the kisan andolan in the context of rising Covid-19 infections and deaths across the country, especially in Delhi.

The kisan andolan  has repudiated these allegations. In a statement put out on 24th April, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha has  extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who have died or have been infected. Kisans have already opened the roads from one side of Delhi’s borders for emergency services. Emergency services are open at every border and the kisan volunteers are ensuring that there is no hindrance to the vehicles transporting oxygen and other essential items for patients.

In a meeting with Haryana government officials on 22nd April, it was decided that barricades from one side of the road would now be removed. Although the Delhi Police has not yet removed the barricades, the vehicles coming or going to Delhi are not facing any problem because of the kisan protest. In fact, the authorities in Hayana and UP are deliberately delaying the trucks carrying oxygen cylinders to the hospitals, sending them through long diversions, and then blaming kisans for the delay.

The kisan andolan is very aware of the spread of the pandemic and is making every effort to take the precautionary measures that are necessary. Volunteers at Singhu, Ghazipur, Tikri and Shahjahanpur are constantly monitoring the situation at the protest sites.

Kisans are providing food at the Anand Vihar Bus Station to workers who are leaving Delhi following the lockdown. They are distributing food and essential medicines to the patients in the hospitals of the capital.

The kisans have rightly refuted the false allegations against the andolan. They  have condemned the governments attempts to use the pandemic to suppress the voice of protest in the country. They have unanimously declared that nothing will shake them from their resolve to continue the fight till such time as the farm laws are repealed and MSP is assured by law.
