Workers organized under the banner of Wheel and Axle Plant Contract Workers’ Union have been organizing protests at the gate of the Yelahanka Rail Wheel Factory in Bengaluru demanding regularization of their services.

Union president G.R. Shivashankar said while 97 workers were regularised in 1999, 179 were still serving on contract. The management had hired around 200 fresh workers about two months ago, overlooking the claims of the existing contract workers. “When there are skilled workers who have worked for over 30 years, why is there a need to hire a new batch?” he said. Workers fear that the management is plotting to throw out the contract workers, step by step. The union has filed a case against the management for violating the Contract Labour Act at the Central Administrative Tribunal. Workers are demanding regularization, as well as benefits such as Provident Fund and ESI facilities.
