Railway workers under the banner of Rail Mazdoor Union held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 25th of February, 2011 to press for their demands.

The workers demanded that the Railway management deal with all unions without any favouritism. They demanded that a new industrial labour policy be drawn to reflect their demands. They demanded jobs for the children of the Railway employees. They also demanded that a wage board for Railways be constituted to reflect the aspirations of the workers and to compensate for the rising cost of living.

Workers demanded productivity linked bonus be rationalized and actual amount be paid with out setting any limits. They demanded that the job vacancies in Railways be assessed properly and filled in immediately. Considering the high cost of living and inflation, they have demanded that gratuity be revised to a minimum of 24 1/2 months average pay. New pension scheme does not provide adequate relief to retired railway employees. Hence it should be scrapped and cover all employees under the family pension scheme.

Workers also demanded adequate and modern housing, medical and educational facilities to Railway employees and their families.

Most importantly workers have demanded scrapping of the contract system. All those who are currently employed under contract must be regularised. Privatising and outsourcing of jobs must be abolished immediately and all these jobs must be carried out by Railway workers.

The union submitted these demands to the Railway minister for immediate action.
