The National Trade Union of Mizoram (NTUM) has launched a struggle demanding that the government immediately implement the recommendations of the Wage Board on Minimum Wages. The struggle has won the support of workers in different sectors and departments of the government.
The State Labour and Employment Minister has declared that the government is “not in a position” to meet the trade unions’ demand to implement the revised minimum wages. Lalrinliana said that whatever the recommendations of the state-level minimum wage board may be, the government is not in a financial position to implement the revised wages.
Minimum wages were last revised by the Congress government of Mizoram on April 1, 2009. Two years down the line, there has been massive increase in prices. Workers have been justly demanding a revision of these wages, and the wage board of the government has itself recommended the same. Now the government is refusing to implement these recommendations. Instead it is attacking the workers with a no-work-no-pay policy.
