The Maharashtra Government has been forced to concede the demand of workers organisations that mill lands in prime locations of Central and South Mumbai cannot just be sold for real estate value. The workers have opposed closures. When the mills have declared closure saying they are "unprofitable" and shifted their operations to more profitable areas, workers have been fighting that tbe land be used for housing workers. For several years the Maharashtra government has refused to concede this just demand of former mill workers.

Now, the state government has announced under pressure of the workers that all mills which close down and whose owners want to use the land for real estate, must give a third each of their land for housing for workers, and for gardens respectively. This is a small victory for the workers.
