Sir, I am very grateful to the CGPI for publishing highly informative and timely article entitled “Rapid militarisation to stake claim as a world class imperialist power’’ in the February 1-15, 2010 issue of PV. There are many important and interesting points that have been emphasized in this article.
The first and foremost theoretical point that has been made is that India today is indeed an ascendant imperialist power and is flexing its muscle like every such accursed and hated power. It is unable to make peace with any of its neighbours as the ruling circles in India do not wish to have any such state of affairs. The persistence of perceived threat from external powers gives the bourgeoisie a pretext to arm itself to the teeth to crush every single demand within the country, whether it is from the tribal peoples, or the working peoples of national minorities. It also gives a pretext for massive expenditure from which huge fractions can be siphoned off to the benefit of the sections of the bourgeoisie. The pressure to continually expand the frontiers of economic activity of the bourgeoisie can only be achieved if the country is an imperialist power. In order to meet these aims the bourgeosie needs to preside over a militarized polity, which in turn is funded by the sweat of the working peoples. Only by extracting more and more from the working class can the bourgeoisie stay on top this course that it has charted out for itself. Such a state of affairs has led to several devastating wars for the peoples of the region and will in the future unless it is checked. Responsible communists must unite with the peoples of the region who are thirsting for peace and dignity and a chance to lead a human existence. The article through its thorough and commited scholarship has brought the issue to the centrestage. All concerned peoples of the region must unite under the banner of peace and oppose militarization.
Sincerely,
S.Nair, Kochi
