Shortly after it was first revealed that the US National Security Agency was using its enormous technological resources to spy on computer and telecommunication networks and gather billions of pieces of information from countries all over the world, including India, more revelations of this nature have come to light.

In the constant, day to day struggle between capital and labour, the capitalist class tries to increase the degree of exploitation of workers and thus increase the surplus value extracted from the labour of workers, by depressing the wages of workers and by increasing the length of the working day.

Workers of Bajaj Auto’s Chakan Plant which produces Pulsar Motorcycles have been on indefinite strike from June 25, 2013. This followed the refusal of the management to have discussions with the union on negotiating a new wage agreement, which was due.

Workers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation went on indefinite strike from July 3, 2013 in protest against the decision of the Central government to disinvest 5 % shares of the NLC. The call for the strike was called by all the unions of workers of NLC. There are 27,000 workers employed in the NLC.

All India Railwaymen Federation, Confederation of Central Government Employees’ Association and All India Defence Employees Association have threatened to go on strike if the Centre fails to meet their charter of demands, including constitution of the Seventh Pay Commission.

Contract workers employed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) organized under the banner of the Delhi Metro Rail Kamgar Union (DMRKU) have protested their termination from June 1 as a result of their contract being ended.

Sanitation workers employed by the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD) are agitating for their just demands. They have threatened to go on strike if the Corporations do not accede to these demands.

According to the workers, the unified MCD had promised to make them permanent employees and give them their arrears. However these promises had not been fulfilled. 

Employees of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) went on indefinite strike from July 5, 2013. The strike call was given by the APSRTC Employees Union and APSRTC Telengana Mazdoor Union.

The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union has opposed the Railway Ministry’s move to provide the drawings and designs of coaches of Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, to five private coach manufacturing factories to come up in the country.  “This move is nothing but plundering of the national wealth for the benefit of private companies,” said Mr.Sridhar, zonal president of the union.

The temporary workers of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited have launched an agitation in the form of a hunger strike, following the refusal of the management to accede to the terms of the contract between the two parties. The workers are organized under the banner of Contract Workers Welfare Association.
