On 22nd February 2011, a two hour nationwide strike by train drivers brought most of the morning rush hour rail transport in Germany to a standstill. The Rhine-Main region and Stuttgart were particularly affected. The city of Dresden in East Germany and the Berlin city train system were also hit by this action. 

A large force of riot police was used in the French city of Marseille to break up a month-long strike by ferry workers protesting against planned cuts. They arrested 14 strikers who were blockading the Mediterranean city’s port in protest at plans to reduce summer crossings from Nice to Corsica. The workers bravely fought back by spraying police with water hoses. 

On March 4, several Delhi based people’s organisations got together and demanded rations for the people and also protested against the closing of the PDS and the suggestion of the government to introduce cash payment system for ration.

On February 28th, 2011 thousands of engine drivers organized under the banner of All India Loco Running Staff Association(AILRSA), marched from Ambedkar Bhawan to Parliament to protest against the callous refusal of the Railway Ministry to address their long standing grievances. 

International Women’s Day was enthusiastically celebrated in the Kalkaji area of South Delhi under the leadership of Purogami Mahila Sangathan (PMS) on  March 6, 2011. Women students from schools and colleges, young working women, activists of local people’s organisations and women from various residential colonies enthusiastically participated in this program, along with the activists of PMS.

We salute the working women who are in the front lines of the battles against the attacks on the livelihood and rights of the working class. We salute the university and school girls fighting for the rights of students and of workers. We salute the women of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Algeria, and other countries, who have come out courageously on to the streets facing the armed might of unpopular regimes, fighting to take control of their own destinies.

The Central Committee of the Communist Ghadar Party of India condemns the Manmohan Singh government for political persecution of Indians resident abroad, and for attacking the rights of Indian workers to visit their motherland. 

On February 23, 2011, workers from all the states of our country, and various sectors of the economy, assembled together in the capital to march to parliament. The march to parliament was aimed at letting the government, parliament, as well as the people of the entire country know that the workers of our country, irrespective of party or union affiliation, have decided to organize unitedly for their rights. The workers affirmed that they are determined to resist the attacks on their livelihood and rights which have been unleashed by the UPA government on behalf of the capitalists.

Food price inflation has been reported at 18% over the previous year in the third week of January. Conditions of life for millions dependent on fixed wage incomes are becoming unbearable. Conditions facing peasants and small family enterprises are also becoming untenable, with extremely high degrees of uncertainty and price volatility affecting food as well as raw materials.

As we go to the press, the North African country of Tunisia is in the midst of a powerful popular revolt of the working masses. The erstwhile President, who has ruled the country since 1987, has fled to Saudi Arabia.
