Everyone can see that US imperialist interference and intervention in South Asia is rising. Every week, some political or military representative or envoy of the United States or Britain is visiting India and Pakistan these days.

In the period following the end of the Cold War, world imperialism, particularly the Anglo American imperialists, have launched a concerted attack against what are being referred to as "forces of Islamic fundamentalism". After the events of September 11, 2001 and the launching of the "global war against terrorism", this campaign has been further stepped up.

Fight for peace in South Asia!

The massacre of innocent men, women and children in Kaluchak, Jammu, has been the signal for the Vajpayee government to raise war hysteria to a fever pitch and to step up war preparations against Pakistan. Hurriyat leader Abdul Ghani Lone was assassinated on precisely the day Shri Vajpayee began his Kashmir tour.

As the attention of the world rivets once again to the Indo-Pak border and the war mobilisation on land, sea and air, as well as the "peace diplomacy" of the Anglo-American and other imperialists, there is need to take stock of various other military and diplomatic developments in recent weeks.

After 2 weeks of procedural wrangles between the BJP and the "opposition", the Lok Sabha debated on the Gujarat genocide. The debate merely confirmed the politicians of the ruling class as charlatans with no concern for the people or their lives, livelihood or dignity as human beings. Even more, it confirmed the bankruptcy of parliamentary democracy.

Roadblocks to the struggle of the working class and peasantry in developing the alternative

The struggle of workers, peasants, working people, women, students and other broad sections of the toiling masses is growing in scope and intensity. Working masses are actively seeking an alternative to the course of globalisation through liberalisation and privatisation.

In the last two years the move to privatize public sector units through divestment to individual capitalists has picked up momentum. Already Modern Foods, Bharat Aluminium (Balco), Computer Maintenance Corporation (CMC), VSNL, Hindustan Zinc have been privatized and more are on the anvil.

End the anti-labour and anti-social offensive!
