Workers around the globe took out massive rallies against the attacks by capitalists and governments on their rights. This May Day witnessed participation of lakhs of workers in many countries of the world.

Workers across the countryheld protests and rallies to mark International Workers’ Day on 1 May 2023.They saluted the struggle of the workers in Chicago in 1886, who fought for the right to an 8-hour work day.They opposed the multiple attacks being made on the working class in the form of privatisation, contractualisation, and anti-worker laws and policies. They demanded their right to better working conditions.

Karl Marx, born on 5th May 1818, was a revolutionary thinker and fighter for communism. His mission in life was to contribute to the overthrow of capitalist society and of the state institutions which it had brought into being, to contribute to the liberation of the modern proletariat. Marx fought with passion for this mission.

The First of May, 2023 marked the centenary of the first ever May Day celebration in India. Exactly a hundred years ago, workers hoisted the red flag in Chennai (then known as Madras). May Day this year therefore assumed great significance for workers. It marks a century of united struggle of the working class of India for its rights, first against the colonial rulers, and since independence, against the Indian ruling class.

A massive military exercise involving the armed forces of the US and South Korea has been launched in the Korean Peninsula. These exercises are being conducted on land, sea and air. The target of these exercises is North Korea, also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The exercises in March and April this year are one of the largest in many years.

They have threatened to go on strike if they are forced to sign the new work-contract agreement, which they have called ‘draconian’.
