Fifty years ago, on 30 April, 1975, the people of Vietnam led by their communist party headed by Ho Chi Minh liberated their country. After a heroic, 20 year long war of liberation, the indomitable Vietnamese people inflicted a resounding defeat on US imperialism and its puppet regime based in Saigon (now known as Ho Chi Minh City). At the end, as the tanks and forces of the Vietnamese liberation fighters rolled into Saigon, all the bombs, weapons, planes and deadly arsenal in the hands of the world’s mightiest imperialist power were no use. No one can forget the images of the US ambassador and other American functionaries and their hangers-on fleeing the city and clambering onto helicopters in a desperate bid to escape.

Even before the end of World War II, the Allies who were fighting jointly against Nazism and fascism got together on several occasions to discuss how to ensure a lasting peace after the War ended and how to spare humanity from the horrors of another such war. Various meetings were held between the leaders of the major Allied powers, including the US, Soviet Union, Britain and China to discuss this.
