Turkey – transport workers

Transport workers across the world are holding a day of action to protest the sacking of 157 transport workers in Turkey by the multinational transport company UPS, which transports cargo by land, sea and air . The workers were dismissed following attempts to unionise. The company has been using threats as well as violence against the workers.

Transport workers across the world are holding a day of action to protest the sacking of 157 transport workers in Turkey by the multinational transport company UPS, which transports cargo by land, sea and air . The workers were dismissed following attempts to unionise. The company has been using threats as well as violence against the workers.

The international day of action is scheduled for September 1, 2010. It will take the form of protests at UPS offices around the world. Unions in countries across all continents have committed to participate in the action day – from Argentina, Hong Kong and the Netherlands to South Africa and the US. They are demanding that the company immediately reinstate the dismissed workers and not penalise workers for joining a union.
