Students Protest at Haryana Agricultural University

Students at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar, concluded their three-week-long protest on 2 July, after they succeeded in making the state government agree to most of their demands.

Post-graduate students had initiated a peaceful protest against a suddenly announced change in the eligibility criteria for scholarships. On 10 June, the Vice Chancellor ordered the police to lathi charge the protesting students.

The violence unleashed by the police angered the students and led to a further escalation of their protest. Many students boycotted exams that began the same day.  The protesting students said that only 13 out of approximately 1,700 students from various courses appeared for the exam. Female students reported that male police officers entered their hostel and pressured them to attend the exams.

Following the police assault on campus, the students demanded the suspension and arrest of two university officials and the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor. They declared that they will end their protest outside the main gate of the campus only after receiving written assurances on their demands.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini constituted a four-member committee to hold discussions with the students. The students agreed to end their protest only after seven of their eight demands were accepted. A committee is to be established to consider the demand for resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.
