On November 19, the British government announced that it is recognising the grouping of Syrian opposition elements as the legitimate representatives of Syria.  This followed the official participation by Britain, along with the US, France and Turkey, in a meeting of Syrian opposition groups held in Qatar on November 8.  This marks a further escalation of the British imperialists’ aggressive and interventionist policy in Syria.

It is becoming ever more clear that the US, British and other imperialists, along with some reactionary states in the region, are hell bent on unseating the government of Bashar al Assad.  They view the Assad government as an obstacle to their plans to isolate Iran and establish a series of pro-imperialist states in the oil-rich and strategic region of West Asia and North Africa.

The methods they have used include supporting, financing and arming opposition elements to create mayhem and civil war in Syria.  The victims of this diabolical strategy that they have been following for more than a year have been hundreds and thousands of ordinary Syrian men, women and children who have been caught in the cross-fire and who have had to flee their homes en masse.  It is very clear that the imperialists and their proteges in Syria are not interested in any ceasefire or dialogue to end the violence.  Their goal is nothing other than the downfall of the present government and the establishment of a new one under the auspices of the Anglo-American and allied imperialists.

The policy being pursued by the imperialists in Syria is in violation of the UN Charter and the established rules and norms concerning the sovereignty of states and the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of countries.  These principles and norms, established through the collective efforts of the world’s peoples after the horrors and destruction of World War II, are under severe attack from the US and other imperialist powers at the present time.

There is huge opposition within Britain to this unprincipled and warmongering policy pursued by the Cameron government with respect to Syria, Iran and other places.  Progressive forces there are calling for the establishment of an anti-war government in their country.  The struggle against the imperialists’ warmongering and aggression in West Asia and North Africa needs to be stepped up.  It is only the united struggle of the peoples that can prevent the imperialists from inflicting fresh disasters on Syria and the other peoples of that region.
